Hi! My name is Tine. I’ve been thinking a lot about majoring in Literature although I don’t want to think that Literature majors only write books. I want to have other options that don’t include me writing my own book. Is there anything that I could do if I pursue it? Upon seeing the subjects of Lit., I instantly thought that I want to explore and venture in it. Thank you so much! :)
[For some reason Tumblr won’t let me publish things from my Inbox, so I had to convert this to a text post.]

Hi Tine! There are tons of options available to Lit majors— most of which don’t involve becoming a novelist.

I like to think that majoring in English Literature isn’t so much about reading and writing, but about learning to appreciate the complexities of our world through the lens of our narratives. In the Sciences you learn about these complexities by studying neurons and atoms, and in English you do so by studying words.

It’s true that Literature doesn’t exactly set you up for a straightforward career, the way, say, Pre-law or Pre-med do, but I’d argue that being able to analyze and write well are skills that are applicable to just about any field.

So what can you do with a degree in English Lit? If you want to write, you could do freelance work, or work for a business (In fact, I recently got a job as the copywriter for a local startup company). You could decide that, despite the stereotype, you want to teach. You could look for jobs in health or law, both of which require talented writers. You could become a grant writer for a nonprofit, or go on to pursue a career in library science.

Or you could decide to do something completely different. I’m sure my lovely followers have plenty of suggestions as well.

Ultimately, though, it comes down to doing what you love. I hope that if you do decide to major in Literature, you allow yourself to discover what you’re passionate about. Find your passion, and the job will follow.

Best of luck!

“If I’d let myself love him, I’d end by hating him. He only excited me. But that wasn’t enough. Even in in the ecstasy of our kisses, I knew he was not my kind. I looked at the books on my table that had stared at me like enemies a little while before. They were again the life of my life. Nothing was so beautiful as to learn to know, to master by the sheer force of my will even the dead squares and triangles of geometry. I seized my books and hugged them to my breast as though they were living things.”

Anzia, how do you know exactly what I’m going through right now?

“Time will say nothing but I told you so,
Time only knows the price we have to pay;
If I could tell you I would let you know.

If we should weep when clowns put on their show,
If we should stumble when musicians play,
Time will say nothing but I told you so.

There are no fortunes to be told, although,
Because I love you more than I can say,
If I could tell you I would let you know.

The winds must come from somewhere when they blow,
There must be reasons why the leaves decay;
Time will say nothing but I told you so.

Perhaps the roses really want to grow,
The vision seriously intends to stay;
If I could tell you I would let you know.

Suppose the lions all get up and go,
And all the brooks and soldiers run away;
Will Time say nothing but I told you so? If I could tell you I would let you know.” If I Could Tell You, by W.H. Auden (via lightningstruck-tower)

What do my class discussions consist of besides literature?

voicemadeofink:

Phallic symbols, incest, gay sex, castration, beasitality, etc. English, it’s the kinky major.
